HOMEOWNER RESOURCES

Now that you've purchased your new home, what's next? Below are a few resources to make sure you get the most out of your new home.

Property Taxes and Exemptions

Property tax notices are mailed out every year before August 25. These notices are called TRIM(truth in millage) Notices and they essentially outline the proposed tax that will levied on your property. These notices are NOT bills so please don't get your checkbook out yet. There will be series of public hearings and then a vote to either approve or modify the millage rate being voted on. If passed(they always pass), your tax bill will be mailed out and available on the your counties property tax website by early November.

***If your taxes are paid in November there is a 4% discount. 3% for December, 2% for January, 1% for February and then no discount for March since that is the month they are due.

Homestead Exemption Overview

The most common exemption is the Homestead Exemption. It can reduce the taxable value of a primary residence by up to $50,000.

  • The first $25,000 applies to all property taxes.
  • The additional $25,000 applies to assessed value over $50,000 (non-school taxes).

Additional Exemptions Include

  • Senior Citizen Exemption: An additional $50,000 exemption for persons 65 and older (income limitations apply).
  • Veterans with Disabilities: Exemptions for service-connected disabilities.
  • Persons with Disabilities: Exemptions for individuals with certain disabilities.
